OSHA's sanitation standard for construction sites (29 CFR 1926.51) requires employers to provide adequate washing facilities when employees are exposed to hazardous substances or perform work that involves contamination. Key provisions:
- Washing facilities: adequate supply of potable water, soap, and individual hand towels or blowers must be provided near work areas involving hazardous exposure.
- Showers: required when employees are exposed to skin-hazardous substances. Must provide hot and cold running water.
- Ratio: one shower per 10 employees who require showers per shift.
- Temperature: hot and cold running water at shower facilities.
- Privacy: facilities must provide privacy for users.
